What is an EDI 829?

The EDI 829 Payment Cancellation Request is the ANSI X12 transaction set used to cancel a previously transmitted electronic payment between an originating company and its originating financial institution before funds are released.

Payments sent in error, duplicated or addressed to the wrong beneficiary can sometimes be stopped if the bank has not yet released them. The cancellation request identifies the payment precisely so the bank can stop it, and the bank reports the outcome. After release, recovery requires other procedures.

How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends the 829, to whom, and which documents usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what X12 release 008010 itself requires: the envelopes around the 829 and the segments and loops the standard marks as required, area by area. Optional loops are listed by the segment that starts them rather than drawn in full. This is the standard's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: each partner's implementation guide usually makes some optional loops mandatory, restricts the codes and may use a different release.

Structure

Mandatory segments in the 829 (X12 release 008010)

The segments X12 release 008010 marks as mandatory at their level, in order. Segments inside optional loops are needed only when the loop is used. This is the standard's requirement, not your trading partner's: each partner's implementation guide names the release it uses, adds the optional segments it requires and restricts the values. The requirement status comes from one published X12 reference listing and has not been checked against a second source.

Practical example

The 829 in practice

A treasury analyst sees that a supplier payment was included in two payment files. Before the bank's cut-off, the company sends an 829 identifying the duplicate payment. The bank cancels it before release and confirms, and the analyst records the cancellation.

Implementation

Implementation considerations for the 829

  • Send cancellations before the bank's release cut-off.
  • Reference the original payment exactly as it was sent.
  • Confirm the cancellation outcome with the bank.
  • Apply the same approval controls as for payments.
