Automotive EDI and API integration

Vehicle manufacturers, truck makers and tier suppliers across North America, Europe and Asia. ECOM connects your business with automotive manufacturers through EDI, APIs, managed file transfer and portal automation, integrated with your ERP.

How the exchange works

How automotive manufacturers exchange business documents

Vehicle makers and their tier suppliers build to just-in-time and just-in-sequence schedules, so releases change daily and ship notices must be exact. North American manufacturers generally use X12 with AIAG guidelines, while European manufacturers use EDIFACT, and in some cases VDA or Odette formats. Each manufacturer publishes its own implementation guide and container label rules.

Common documents with automotive manufacturers
DocumentWhat it does in this relationship
EDI 830Planning Schedule with Release Capability The material release: forecast and authorized quantities over the planning horizon.
EDI 862Shipping Schedule The shipping schedule: firm short-term quantities and times that override the 830.
EDI 856Advance Ship Notice The advance ship notice, sent when the truck leaves, with container and label details.
DELFORDelivery schedule The EDIFACT delivery schedule used by European manufacturers, the counterpart of the 830.
DESADVDespatch advice The EDIFACT despatch advice, the counterpart of the 856.

What onboarding a new automotive partner usually involves

  1. Obtain the manufacturer’s implementation guide, label specification and supplier portal access.
  2. Map releases to your ERP so cumulative quantities and schedule changes are handled correctly.
  3. Complete the manufacturer’s certification tests for the ship notice and labels before the first shipment.
