Retail EDI and API integration
Department stores, mass merchants, grocers, pharmacies, home improvement and specialty retailers. ECOM connects your business with retailers through EDI, APIs, managed file transfer and portal automation, integrated with your ERP.
How the exchange works
How retailers exchange business documents
Retailers publish vendor compliance guides that set the documents, versions, response times and carton labels each supplier must use. A missing or inaccurate ship notice slows receiving at the distribution center and is a common reason for chargebacks, so the 856 and the GS1-128 labels usually matter as much as the order itself.
| Document | What it does in this relationship |
|---|---|
| EDI 850Purchase Order | The retailer’s order: items, quantities, prices, ship-to locations and requested dates. |
| EDI 855Purchase Order Acknowledgment | Your answer to the order: lines accepted, changed or back-ordered, sent within the retailer’s deadline. |
| EDI 856Advance Ship Notice | The ship notice, sent before the goods arrive, describing each carton and matching its label. |
| EDI 810Invoice | The invoice, matched by the retailer against the order and what was received. |
| EDI 846Inventory Inquiry/Advice | Stock you have available, used by the retailer for replenishment and drop-ship listings. |
| EDI 852Product Activity Data | Sales and on-hand stock by store, sent by the retailer so you can plan replenishment. |
What onboarding a new retail partner usually involves
- Obtain the retailer’s vendor guide and EDI specifications, usually from its supplier portal.
- Map each required document to your ERP and agree the test cases with the retailer’s EDI team.
- Print carton labels and send ship notices exactly as the guide specifies before going live.
