Healthcare

Secure, auditable integration for healthcare operations

Healthcare organizations exchange two very different kinds of data. Supply chain documents move products between manufacturers, distributors and providers, while administrative transactions carry claims, payments and eligibility under HIPAA rules. ECOM integrates both kinds over secure, monitored connections and the enterprise systems behind them.

What is healthcare EDI?

Healthcare EDI includes two broad groups of transactions. Administrative transactions, such as claims, remittances, eligibility and enrollment, follow ANSI X12 standards adopted under HIPAA, including the 837, 835, 270/271 and 834. Supply chain transactions, such as purchase orders, ship notices and invoices for medical products, use the same X12 documents found in other industries, often with additional product and lot data.

Who it's for

Different roles, different workflows

  • Medical product suppliers and manufacturers

Orders, acknowledgments, ship notices and invoices with distributors, health systems and group purchasing channels, often with lot, expiration and product data.

  • Health systems and providers

Secure exchange of supply chain documents with distributors and suppliers, and of administrative files with payers, clearinghouses and service partners.

  • Payers and administrators

Enrollment, eligibility, claim and payment files exchanged with providers, employers and partners over secure, audited connections.

How the workflow runs

Two kinds of healthcare exchange, one secure integration layer

Supply chain documents move products between manufacturers, distributors and providers. Administrative transactions carry enrollment, eligibility, claims and payments. They use different partners and rules, but both depend on secure, monitored connections.

Supply chain documents

  1. 850Purchase orderProvider or distributor orders products
  2. 855AcknowledgmentSupplier confirms availability
  3. 856Ship noticeShipment with product, lot and expiry data
  4. 810InvoiceBilled against order and receipt

HIPAA administrative transactions

  1. 834EnrollmentPlan sponsor to payer
  2. 270/271EligibilityProvider asks; payer answers
  3. 837ClaimProvider to payer or clearinghouse
  4. 835RemittancePayer explains payment

Both run over secure, monitored connections. Which transactions are in scope, and who is responsible for compliance, is agreed with each organization.

Typical X12 workflow. Each trading partner's implementation guide defines its own documents, versions and timing.
  1. 01

    Supply chain orders and shipments

Purchase orders, acknowledgments, ship notices with product, lot and expiry data, and invoices exchanged with distributors, suppliers and health systems.

  2. 02

    Administrative files

Enrollment (834), eligibility (270/271), claims (837) and remittance (835) files exchanged with payers, clearinghouses and partners, with the transactions in scope agreed during scoping.

  3. 03

    Secure transfer and monitoring

Encrypted connections per partner, logged transfers and alerts on late or failed exchanges that would affect payments, supplies or member services.

Challenges

Integration challenges in healthcare

01

Protecting sensitive data

Patient and member data requires encryption in transit, controlled access and audit trails for every exchange.

02

Many partner types

Providers, payers, clearinghouses, distributors and suppliers each have different standards, connection methods and testing requirements.

03

Reliability matters

A delayed file can hold up payments, supply replenishment or member services, so failures need to be visible quickly.

How we help

How ECOM supports healthcare companies

  • Secure file transfer

Encrypted, monitored exchange over AS2, SFTP and FTPS, with ECOM managed file transfer or IBM Sterling File Gateway.

  • Supply chain EDI

Orders, acknowledgments, ship notices and invoices with medical suppliers, distributors and health systems.

  • Administrative transaction flows

Integration patterns for HIPAA administrative files, scoped with your compliance team.

  • Partner certification

Partner onboarding and testing for the documents and connections in scope. Certification here confirms readiness to trade, not regulatory accreditation.

  • IBM Sterling support

Administration, upgrades and managed operations for IBM Sterling environments common in healthcare.

  • Monitoring

Alerts on late or failed transfers that affect operations.

PRISM products

Which PRISM products apply

Each partner connects in the way it can support. These products cover the connections and visibility this industry needs most.

  • PRISM-EDI

Exchange and translation of X12 supply chain and administrative documents over AS2, SFTP or FTPS, integrated with enterprise systems.

  • PRISM-SmartConvert

Claims, forms and supporting documents that arrive on paper or as scans converted into structured data, with review and audit trail.

  • PRISM-SCV

Monitoring of transactions and exceptions so late or failed exchanges are visible.

Systems integration

What healthcare integration connects to

The systems involved depend on whether the exchange is supply chain or administrative.

SystemWhat flowsWhat to plan for
ERP and supply chain systemsPurchase orders, receipts, ship notices and invoices for medical products.Product, lot and expiration data must be carried accurately where partners require it.
Claims and administrative systemsEnrollment, eligibility, claims and remittance files.Transactions in scope and compliance responsibilities are agreed with your compliance team.
Secure file transferEncrypted, monitored transfers with each partner.Protocols, keys and certificates are managed per partner, with audit logs retained.
