Third-Party Logistics EDI and API integration

Freight brokers, global forwarders, warehousing and fulfillment providers. ECOM connects your business with logistics providers through EDI, APIs, managed file transfer and portal automation, integrated with your ERP.

How the exchange works

How logistics providers exchange business documents

When a third party stores and ships your goods, your ERP still owns the orders and the inventory. Warehouse documents keep the two in step: you tell the warehouse what to ship and what is coming in, and the warehouse confirms what actually shipped and was received.

Common documents with logistics providers
DocumentWhat it does in this relationship
EDI 940Warehouse Shipping Order The shipping order you send to the warehouse for each customer order.
EDI 945Warehouse Shipping Advice The warehouse’s confirmation of what was picked, packed and shipped.
EDI 943Warehouse Stock Transfer Shipment Advice Advance notice of inbound stock being sent to the warehouse.
EDI 944Warehouse Stock Transfer Receipt Advice The warehouse’s receipt of that stock, with quantities and any discrepancies.
EDI 214Transportation Carrier Shipment Status Message Shipment status from the provider or its carriers.

What onboarding a new third-party logistics partner usually involves

  1. Agree item masters, units of measure and location codes with the provider.
  2. Map orders, receipts and adjustments so ERP and warehouse inventory reconcile daily.
  3. Test partial shipments, short receipts and cancellations as well as normal orders.
