What is an EDI 944?
The EDI 944 Warehouse Stock Transfer Receipt Advice is the ANSI X12 transaction set a receiving location uses to advise the depositor, or its agent, that a transfer shipment has been received. It provides the detail of the product received, including quantities and any differences such as damaged or short items.
For the product owner, the 944 is the confirmation that inventory is now available at the warehouse. It updates available stock in the owner's systems and is the basis for resolving any discrepancy with what was shipped.
How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends the 944, to whom, and which documents usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what X12 release 008010 itself requires: the envelopes around the 944 and the segments and loops the standard marks as required, area by area. Optional loops are listed by the segment that starts them rather than drawn in full. This is the standard's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: each partner's implementation guide usually makes some optional loops mandatory, restricts the codes and may use a different release.
When it is used
- Confirming receipt of a 943 transfer shipment
- Reporting damaged, short or over quantities at receiving
- Updating the owner's available inventory at a 3PL

Structure
Mandatory segments in the 944 (X12 release 008010)
The segments X12 release 008010 marks as mandatory at their level, in order. Segments inside optional loops are needed only when the loop is used. This is the standard's requirement, not your trading partner's: each partner's implementation guide names the release it uses, adds the optional segments it requires and restricts the values. The requirement status comes from one published X12 reference listing and has not been checked against a second source.

Practical example
The 944 in practice
A 3PL unloads a trailer that a manufacturer announced in a 943. One pallet is damaged. The 3PL sends a 944 confirming the quantities received in good condition and reporting the damaged pallet. The manufacturer's ERP updates available inventory and opens a claim for the damage.
Implementation
Implementation considerations for the 944
- Report actual received quantities by item and lot, not the expected quantities from the 943.
- Use agreed codes for damage and other exceptions so the owner can act automatically.
- Send the 944 promptly, because sales and order promising depend on it.
