What is the EDIFACT DESTIM message?

DESTIM is the UN/EDIFACT equipment damage and repair estimate. The directory describes it as a message for the container repair, shipping and leasing industry. A repair depot can use it to send an equipment owner or user a description of damage, as an estimate of the repair actions and costs, and the owner can use it to approve the repair.

Estimates use standard codes for damage location, type and repair method, typically from the Container Equipment Data Exchange (CEDEX) codes, so owners can approve or reject repairs consistently across depots.

Equipment repair depot sends it to equipment owner or user, such as a shipping line or lessor. It usually follows CODECO. Inside the UNB and UNH envelopes, the directory D.21A requires, in the start of message: BGM (Beginning of message) and DTM (Date/time/period) and body and segment groups: the required SG1 loop with EQD (Equipment details) and UNS (Section control). 5 conditional segment groups are listed by their trigger segment. How the EDIFACT DESTIM message worksEquipment damage and repair estimate: who sends it, where it fits and what the directory marks mandatory1 WHERE IT FITSUSUALLY FOLLOWSCODECOContainer gateDESTIMSENDEREquipment repairdepotRECEIVEREquipment owner oruser, such as ashipping line or lessorCONTRL syntax report back, if agreedUSUALLY FOLLOWED BYNo business reply expected2 WHAT DIRECTORY D.21A REQUIRESInterchange: sender and recipient IDsUNB … UNZMessage DESTIMUNH … UNTSTART OF MESSAGEBGMBeginning of messageDTMDate/time/periodBODY AND SEGMENT GROUPSMandatory group SG1 · repeats up to 1EQDEquipment detailsUNSSection control+ 5 conditional groups, starting with:NADTDTDTMRFFLINBlue box: mandatory segment group. How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends DESTIM, to whom, and which messages usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what the directory D.21A itself requires: the envelopes around DESTIM and the segments and segment groups it marks mandatory. Conditional groups are listed by their trigger segment rather than drawn in full. This is the directory's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: a message implementation guide, such as an industry subset or a partner’s own guide, usually makes some conditional groups mandatory, restricts the codes and may use an older directory.

When it is used

  • Sending repair estimates for damaged containers
  • Approving or rejecting repairs
  • Allocating repair costs between owner and user

Structure

Mandatory segments in DESTIM (directory D.21A)

In UN/EDIFACT directory D.21A, the DESTIM message has 40 segment positions arranged in 12 segment groups. These are the segments and segment groups marked mandatory at message level, in order; a mandatory group is shown with the segment that starts it. Segments inside conditional groups are needed only when the group is used. This is the directory’s requirement, not your trading partner’s: each partner’s message implementation guide names the directory it uses, often an older one such as D.96A or D.01B where the structure can differ, makes some conditional segments mandatory and restricts the codes.

Practical example

DESTIM in practice

An empty container returns to a depot with a damaged door and a torn floor. The depot sends the shipping line a DESTIM listing each damage with location and repair codes, labor hours and material costs. The line approves the floor repair, charges the door damage to the last user and authorizes the work.

Implementation

Implementation considerations for DESTIM

  • Use the standard damage and repair codes the owner accepts.
  • Include photographs or references where owners require them.
  • Identify which party is responsible for each damage.
  • Track estimates through approval, repair and invoicing.
