What is an EDI 843?
The EDI 843 Response to Request for Quotation is the ANSI X12 transaction set a seller uses to answer a buyer's request for quotation (840). It returns prices, quantity breaks, delivery schedules, validity dates and other terms for the items or services requested, and can note items the seller declines to quote.
Because the buyer compares several 843s side by side, consistent item identification and pricing units matter. The accepted quote usually becomes the basis of a purchase order (850) or a contract, so the prices and terms in the 843 should be the ones the supplier is prepared to honor.
How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends the 843, to whom, and which documents usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what X12 release 008010 itself requires: the envelopes around the 843 and the segments and loops the standard marks as required, area by area. Optional loops are listed by the segment that starts them rather than drawn in full. This is the standard's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: each partner's implementation guide usually makes some optional loops mandatory, restricts the codes and may use a different release.
When it is used
- Answering a buyer's request for quotation
- Quoting price breaks by quantity
- Stating lead times and quote validity periods
- Declining or partially quoting requested items

Structure
Mandatory segments in the 843 (X12 release 008010)
The segments X12 release 008010 marks as mandatory at their level, in order. Segments inside optional loops are needed only when the loop is used. This is the standard's requirement, not your trading partner's: each partner's implementation guide names the release it uses, adds the optional segments it requires and restricts the values. The requirement status comes from one published X12 reference listing and has not been checked against a second source.

Practical example
The 843 in practice
A precision parts supplier receives an 840 for 5,000 brackets. Its estimating team prices the part, and the supplier's system sends an 843 with unit prices at 1,000, 2,500 and 5,000 pieces, a six-week lead time and a 60-day validity period. The buyer loads all three suppliers' responses into its sourcing tool and awards the order.
Implementation
Implementation considerations for the 843
- Reference the buyer's request number on every response so the quote is matched correctly.
- Quote in the units of measure and currency the request asked for.
- Make validity dates explicit, because buyers may order weeks after the quote.
- Keep quoted prices synchronized with the price the order and invoice will carry.
