What is an EDI 301?

The EDI 301 Confirmation (Ocean) is the ANSI X12 transaction set an ocean carrier uses to confirm space, container and equipment availability in response to a 300 booking request. It can also be sent to notify other parties, such as terminal operators or other ocean carriers, about the booking.

The confirmation gives the shipper the booking number, the vessel and voyage, cut-off dates and where to collect empty containers. Those details drive the rest of the export process, from container pickup to the submission of shipping instructions.

How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends the 301, to whom, and which documents usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what X12 release 008010 itself requires: the envelopes around the 301 and the segments and loops the standard marks as required, area by area. Optional loops are listed by the segment that starts them rather than drawn in full. This is the standard's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: each partner's implementation guide usually makes some optional loops mandatory, restricts the codes and may use a different release.

Structure

Mandatory segments in the 301 (X12 release 008010)

The segments X12 release 008010 marks as mandatory at their level, in order. Segments inside optional loops are needed only when the loop is used. This is the standard's requirement, not your trading partner's: each partner's implementation guide names the release it uses, adds the optional segments it requires and restricts the values. The requirement status comes from one published X12 reference listing and has not been checked against a second source.

Practical example

The 301 in practice

After receiving a 300 booking request for four containers, the ocean carrier sends a 301 confirming the booking, the vessel and voyage, the container yard for empty pickup and the cargo cut-off date. The forwarder's system updates the shipment and alerts the exporter to load and return the containers before the cut-off.

Implementation

Implementation considerations for the 301

  • Watch for changed confirmations, because vessel and cut-off changes affect loading plans.
  • Store cut-off dates and booking numbers where shipping teams can act on them.
  • Match each 301 to the booking request it confirms.
