What is the EDIFACT REPREM message?

REPREM is the UN/EDIFACT reinsurance premium message. The directory describes it as supporting the technical entries for any premium or brokerage adjustment amount, by giving all the relevant data, mainly the amounts and the way they are built up.

Premiums on reinsurance contracts are often provisional and adjusted later, for example on the actual premium income of the cedent. The premium message documents each premium or adjustment so the counterparty can check and book it. Adjustment premiums often follow the end of the contract period, once the actual premium income or other basis is known.

How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends REPREM, to whom, and which messages usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what the directory D.21A itself requires: the envelopes around REPREM and the segments and segment groups it marks mandatory. Conditional groups are listed by their trigger segment rather than drawn in full. This is the directory's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: a message implementation guide, such as an industry subset or a partner’s own guide, usually makes some conditional groups mandatory, restricts the codes and may use an older directory.

Structure

Mandatory segments in REPREM (directory D.21A)

In UN/EDIFACT directory D.21A, the REPREM message has 31 segment positions arranged in 6 segment groups. These are the segments and segment groups marked mandatory at message level, in order; a mandatory group is shown with the segment that starts it. Segments inside conditional groups are needed only when the group is used. This is the directory’s requirement, not your trading partner’s: each partner’s message implementation guide names the directory it uses, often an older one such as D.96A or D.01B where the structure can differ, makes some conditional segments mandatory and restricts the codes.

Practical example

REPREM in practice

An excess-of-loss treaty has a minimum and deposit premium adjusted on the cedent's actual premium income. At year end, the broker sends the reinsurers a REPREM with the subject premium income, the adjustable rate and the adjustment premium due. The reinsurers verify the calculation and expect it in the next account.

Implementation

Implementation considerations for REPREM

  • Show the premium basis and rate applied.
  • Distinguish deposit, adjustment and reinstatement premiums.
  • Reconcile premium messages with the technical accounts.
  • Follow market standards for premium messages.
