What is the EDIFACT IFTSAI message?

IFTSAI is the UN/EDIFACT forwarding and transport schedule and availability information message. Its function, as defined in the directory, is to request transport schedule or availability information and to answer such a request.

Carriers use it to publish sailing schedules and capacity, and shippers and forwarders use it to ask what departures are available between two places. The answer lists the vessels or other means of transport, voyages, ports or terminals and the departure and arrival dates. Answers are usually returned as another IFTSAI.

How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends IFTSAI, to whom, and which messages usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what the directory D.21A itself requires: the envelopes around IFTSAI and the segments and segment groups it marks mandatory. Conditional groups are listed by their trigger segment rather than drawn in full. This is the directory's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: a message implementation guide, such as an industry subset or a partner’s own guide, usually makes some conditional groups mandatory, restricts the codes and may use an older directory.

Structure

Mandatory segments in IFTSAI (directory D.21A)

In UN/EDIFACT directory D.21A, the IFTSAI message has 55 segment positions arranged in 17 segment groups. These are the segments and segment groups marked mandatory at message level, in order; a mandatory group is shown with the segment that starts it. Segments inside conditional groups are needed only when the group is used. This is the directory’s requirement, not your trading partner’s: each partner’s message implementation guide names the directory it uses, often an older one such as D.96A or D.01B where the structure can differ, makes some conditional segments mandatory and restricts the codes.

  • UNH
  • BGM
  • UNT

Practical example

IFTSAI in practice

A forwarder needs options for a shipment from Shanghai to Le Havre. Its booking tool sends carriers an IFTSAI request for departures in the next three weeks. Each carrier answers with an IFTSAI listing vessels, voyages, cut-offs and estimated transit times, and the forwarder books the best option with an IFTMBF.

Implementation

Implementation considerations for IFTSAI

  • Use UN/LOCODEs for ports and places, mapped to your own location codes.
  • Refresh schedules regularly, since they change often.
  • Distinguish requests from responses with the message function code.
  • Keep vessel and voyage identifiers consistent with bookings.
