What is an EDI 463?

The EDI 463 Rail Rate Reply is the ANSI X12 transaction set used to reply to a rail rate transaction from the receiver's application, based on the data content or business rules. It serves as an application acceptance, an application rejection or an indication of other status.

A rate transaction can be syntactically valid yet fail business checks, for example a reference to an unknown station or an overlap with existing rates. The rate reply tells the sender whether the rates were loaded and why not if rejected.

How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends the 463, to whom, and which documents usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what X12 release 008010 itself requires: the envelopes around the 463 and the segments and loops the standard marks as required, area by area. Optional loops are listed by the segment that starts them rather than drawn in full. This is the standard's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: each partner's implementation guide usually makes some optional loops mandatory, restricts the codes and may use a different release.

Structure

Mandatory segments in the 463 (X12 release 008010)

The segments X12 release 008010 marks as mandatory at their level, in order. Segments inside optional loops are needed only when the loop is used. This is the standard's requirement, not your trading partner's: each partner's implementation guide names the release it uses, adds the optional segments it requires and restricts the values. The requirement status comes from one published X12 reference listing and has not been checked against a second source.

Practical example

The 463 in practice

A shipper's audit system receives a 460 rate docket in which one rate references a station code it does not recognize. It loads the other rates and returns a 463 rejecting that item with the reason. The railroad corrects the station code and resends the rate.

Implementation

Implementation considerations for the 463

  • Give clear reasons for every rejected rate item.
  • Reference the rate items being answered.
  • Correct and resend rejected rates promptly.
  • Distinguish application replies from functional acknowledgments.
