What is an EDI 151?
The EDI 151 Electronic Filing of Tax Return Data Acknowledgment is the ANSI X12 transaction set used to electronically acknowledge receipt of each tax return filed using the Electronic Filing of Tax Return Data transaction set (813). It may indicate any errors found.
For tax filers, the acknowledgment is proof that a return was received and accepted, which matters for meeting deadlines. Errors reported in it must be corrected and the return refiled, so filers monitor acknowledgments closely around due dates.
How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends the 151, to whom, and which documents usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what X12 release 008010 itself requires: the envelopes around the 151 and the segments and loops the standard marks as required, area by area. Optional loops are listed by the segment that starts them rather than drawn in full. This is the standard's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: each partner's implementation guide usually makes some optional loops mandatory, restricts the codes and may use a different release.

- Reporting errors in filed returns
- Providing proof of timely filing

Structure
Mandatory segments in the 151 (X12 release 008010)
The segments X12 release 008010 marks as mandatory at their level, in order. Segments inside optional loops are needed only when the loop is used. This is the standard's requirement, not your trading partner's: each partner's implementation guide names the release it uses, adds the optional segments it requires and restricts the values. The requirement status comes from one published X12 reference listing and has not been checked against a second source.

Practical example
The 151 in practice
A fuel distributor files tax returns in six states. Five states return 151 acknowledgments accepting the returns; one reports an error in a jurisdiction code. The distributor corrects the return and refiles it before the deadline.
Implementation
Implementation considerations for the 151
- Monitor acknowledgments for every return filed.
- Correct and refile rejected returns before deadlines.
- Keep acknowledgments as proof of filing.
- Map each error code to a corrective action.
