IBM API Connect
IBM API Connect, implemented and run for your API program
IBM API Connect manages APIs across their lifecycle, from design and publishing to secured access through DataPower gateways, developer portals and analytics. ECOM implements, upgrades and supports API Connect, and connects the APIs it manages to the systems and partners behind them.

The challenge
Why API programs stall
Publishing an API is the easy part. Each API needs a secure gateway, consistent policies, a portal where developers can find and subscribe to it, analytics to see how it is used, and governance so the catalog stays coherent as it grows. Without that discipline, APIs multiply without control and the backend systems behind them become harder to protect and change.
- APIs published inconsistently, with different security for each one
- No single catalog or developer portal for consumers
- Limited visibility of who calls which API and how often
- Upgrades and gateway changes that teams postpone
Scope
What ECOM's API Connect specialists do
-
Implementation and configuration
Install and configure API Connect and its gateways for your environment, whether on premises, hybrid or as IBM's SaaS offering.
-
API design and publishing
Define APIs, products and plans, and publish them to the right catalogs and consumers.
-
Gateway policies
Configure DataPower gateway policies for routing, transformation and traffic management to match each API's requirements.
-
API security
Apply authentication, authorization and access policies so each API is exposed only to the consumers it is meant for.
-
Governance
Establish naming, versioning and review practices that keep the API catalog consistent as it grows.
-
Analytics and monitoring
Set up API usage analytics and operational monitoring so teams see consumption, errors and trends.
-
Backend integration
Connect APIs to ERP, databases and applications through IBM App Connect, IBM webMethods, PRISM or direct interfaces.
-
Upgrades and managed support
Plan and carry out version upgrades, and support API Connect in production as a managed service or with your team.
Approach
How an engagement runs
- 01
Assess
Review your APIs, consumers, gateways, security requirements and current version, and agree priorities.
- 02
Design
Define catalogs, products, plans, policies and governance before APIs are published or migrated.
- 03
Implement
Configure API Connect and gateways, publish APIs and connect them to backend systems, with testing at each step.
- 04
Operate
Monitor, upgrade and support the API platform as a managed service or alongside your team.
Technical considerations
IBM API Connect and PRISM-API Gateway are different products
Both relate to APIs, but they come from different vendors and serve different purposes. ECOM works with both.
-
IBM API Connect
IBM's API lifecycle management product, licensed from IBM, for governing, securing and publishing an organization's APIs.
-
PRISM-API Gateway
ECOM's own product within the PRISM platform, focused on API-based connectivity for integration and trading partner scenarios.
-
How to choose
The choice depends on your API strategy, existing IBM investment and integration needs. ECOM recommends one, the other or a combination.
-
App Connect and API Connect
IBM App Connect builds the integrations and services; API Connect publishes, secures and governs them as APIs.
Why it matters
What you gain
Consistent security
Every API is published through governed gateways with policies applied the same way.
Discoverable APIs
Developers find, test and subscribe to APIs through a portal instead of asking each team.
Visibility of usage
Analytics show which APIs are used, by whom and how they perform.
Fit
When teams call us
Launching an API program
Stand up API Connect with portals, policies and governance for the first set of APIs.
Exposing integration services as APIs
Publish services built on App Connect, webMethods or PRISM as managed, secured APIs.
Partner APIs alongside EDI
Offer APIs to trading partners that prefer them, while EDI continues for those that do not.
Upgrading API Connect
Move to a newer release or deployment option with a tested migration of APIs and policies.
